Psychofreud School of Sunday
Part 1
[dictionary]
La Baraka[Herastrau, Bucuresti] unde e swing, chill si buna dispozitie, dupa un pahar de vorba cu Psychofreud am ajuns la concluzia ca trebui sa ne impartaseasca public mai multe. O sa vedeti de ce. Asadar ii multumesc invitatului nostru pentru partea intai din Scoala de Duminica :) [a ramas in engleza pentru a pastra autenticitatea]
Daca veti gasi aceste informatii folositoare, shout pentru partea a doua!
In reggae and ragga jungle, there are alot of words and expressions which might sound strange to many people.
Well have no fear, Psychofreud is here to teach!
Basic patois lessons:
Patois: also known as Broken English. This is the jamaican dialect of english as we know it. It is a mix of
mostly english and african.
Gwaan: short for "go on", but used in different ways. Used in the normal way, but also when expressing
whats happening. "Big tings a gwaan" - big things are happening.
Deejay: Before the term DJ we all use today, the word came from Jamaica, but was not used for the guy who
was spinning the records. That is the Selecta (the one selecting the music). Even today the deejay is the one
with the microphone, and almost always sings, or chants, on top of a beat.
Punany: The female genitals
Batty: the butt!
Bumba: the butt!
Raas: the butt!
Battyman / Battyboy: Curseword for gay man. Jamaicans hate gay people.
Bumbaclaat / Raasclaat: literally something you wipe your ass with, but in addition to be a curseword
bumbaclaat is also used as a powerword, used alone to express excitement.
Ras: prince
Ras Tafar I: Prince Tafar the First. Tafar is the given name for the emperor of Ethiopia which is seen
by the rastas as the reincarnation of Jesus. The word Rasta comes from this.
Haile Selassie I: Title given to Tafar after being crowned emperor.
Jah: short for Jahovia, meaning god.
Gyal: girl
Bwoy: boy
Soundbwoy: Not many know it, but its actually a curseword. In a reggae soundsystem, they had a soundman, which was
the sound engineer. To call him a soundbwoy was to call him smaller or younger than he really was, and was considered
an insult.
Bad: often meaning good
Cyaan: Can't.
Banton: a storyteller
